Most any contractor can install you a new system, and it will most likely work initially. But did you know that an incorrectly installed system will cost you more to operate and maintain? It will also most likely need replaced sooner than the same system that was properly installed.

The system and the ductwork needs to be sized correctly for the space it is called upon to heat or cool. Many times existing ductwork is undersized, or the unit is oversized. This results in decreased efficiency and increased operating costs.

The system must also be installed using the proper tools and procedures. When installing the line sets, nitrogen must be injected into the lines to prevent scale and oxidation during brazing. Also, the system must be evacuated properly to remove all moisture and non-condensable gases. The system needs to be evacuated to below 500 microns. A vacuum gauge should be used in order to confirm the system is properly evacuated and leak-free.

Even the best of equipment can not keep you comfortable if the air it heats or cools cannot get to where you need it. This is where properly sized and installed ductwork is required. The joints in the ducts should be sealed to prevent the loss of the air you just paid to condition. Also leaks on the return side can suck unpleasant smells or allergens into your home from the attic, basement, or crawlspace. The ductwork must be insulated properly to prevent damage to your home from moisture and to save heating or cooling dollars.

Upon startup of your new system, the contractor should check things such as static pressure, airflow, superheat/subcool of the refrigeration system, voltage and amps of the electrical motors and heaters, and gas pressure and operation of any furnaces.
